King County Participatory Budgeting Barbershop Conversation
#WWConverge On November 25th in Skyway, the first King County Participatory Budgeting Barbershop Conversation took place and was hosted by Eddie Edwards, owner of Personal Touch Barbershop. The conversation was moderated by community leaders Chukundi Salisbury and Emijah Smith. The event's purpose was to engage community members who live in Skyway to submit impactful ideas of how to spend nearly $5 million in participating areas and specifically to identify and discuss ideas that would be impactful to the Black community. Some of the ideas submitted during the Barbershop Conversation included a holistic healing space that focuses on health and overall wellness, a Mental Health crisis community support team, Barber College in Skyway, a Business Training program for Food Vendors, and more safe spaces for youth. Community members in Skyway and across unincorporated King County have been able to submit ideas since September, and the idea phase closed on November 30th. More conversations will occur in early 2024, and top-ranking ideas will be put to a ballot and in June 2024, the community will vote on which projects and ideas to fund. CCRP v War on Drugs
President Richard Nixon announced the federal War on Drugs in 1971, which established harsher penalties for drug possession and increased government spending on law enforcement. Primarily considered a policy failure, the War on Drugs caused a 500% increase in drug-related convictions across the country. Let's fast forward to the present day. On May 9, 2024, the Washington State Department of Commerce @wastatecommerce announced its plan to deliver $9.8 million in grants to 28 local organizations and institutions. These grants prioritize financial programs serving Black, Latino, and tribal communities that were disproportionately impacted by the War on Drugs. Some programs offered include homebuyer education, business coaching, construction loans, and debt remediation. King's Dream Consulting is one of 28 recipients of these grants, and we are so excited to share this opportunity with you!
