Who Is the WA State Minority and Justice Commission

Established by the Washington State Supreme Court in 1990, the Minority and Justice Commission works to identify and address racial and ethnic bias within Washington's courts and judicial system. The Commission carries out this mission through research, education, and community outreach, in partnership with judges, court staff, and other justice-system partners across the state.

The Challenge

Each year, the Commission's Outreach Committee compiles a directory profiling judges of color across Washington State — a publication meant to recognize representation on the bench and connect communities with the judiciary. The Commission also needed its 2019–2023 Annual Report designed: a polished, print-and-digital publication documenting the Commission's work addressing racial and ethnic bias in the state's courts. Producing both deliverables required professional publication design, secured through the kind of formal competitive bid and procurement process typical of a state judicial-branch client, delivered on a defined scope, budget, and timeline.

What King's Dream Built

  • Submitted a competitive bid for the directory's digital design, scoped to a defined budget and a four-week turnaround

  • Coordinated directly with the Commission's Outreach Committee — including its judicial co-chairs — to translate submitted judge profiles and photos into a cohesive, publication-ready layout

  • Delivered a professional digital design consistent in look and feel with the Commission's prior directory editions

  • Designed the Commission's 2019–2023 Annual Report — a full print-and-digital publication, produced with print-ready files (including bleed and crop marks) alongside high- and low-resolution web versions

  • Worked within the structure, timelines, and procurement expectations of a state judicial-branch client across both projects

Takeaway

Government and judicial-branch clients bring their own rhythm — formal bid processes, committee approvals, and a need for precision and discretion at every step. King's Dream's work with the WA State Minority and Justice Commission, across both a judicial directory and a full annual report, shows that same care translating directly into clean, professional deliverables, regardless of format or sector.
