A Baltimore nonprofit serving LGBTQ+ survivors of trafficking needed its marketing and digital operations to keep pace with its growth, without pulling staff away from frontline community work. King's Dream became that outsourced team.

Meet Baltimore Safe Haven: Opportunity for Baltimore's LGBTQ+ Community

Baltimore Safe Haven is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for a higher quality of life for LGBTQ+ individuals in Baltimore City, including transgender residents and survivors of sex trafficking, who are living in survival mode. King's Dream Business Consulting (KDBC) partnered with Baltimore Safe Haven's leadership team to strengthen the organization's public-facing marketing and digital operations so their mission-driven work could reach more of the community and supporters who make it possible.

For a lean nonprofit, the website and the email list are how steady support finds you. M+R's 2023 Benchmarks study found that monthly giving grew from 24% to 28% of all online revenue in 2022, even as online revenue for the average nonprofit fell 4%. In a year like that, the supporters who stay informed and give consistently matter more, and every hour a small team spends wrestling with its own website is an hour not spent on frontline work.

The Challenge: A Digital Presence That Had to Keep Pace Without Costing Frontline Time

Baltimore Safe Haven came to KDBC through an Executive Plan engagement, looking for outside support with website development and maintenance, social media management, marketing, and IT support for the online databases and forms the organization relies on to collect and report program data. Like many lean nonprofit teams, Baltimore Safe Haven needed a digital presence that could keep pace with the organization's growth without pulling staff away from direct community work.

Inside the Engagement: Website, Brand, Audits, and Ongoing Support

Over the course of the engagement, the KDBC team worked through a structured scope of work with Baltimore Safe Haven's leadership, including:

  • A full website audit covering design execution, user-friendliness, information architecture, and conversion/analytics tracking

  • A redesigned and rebuilt website, delivered through KDBC's phased website development process

  • Brand management support to keep Baltimore Safe Haven's visual identity consistent across channels

  • Marketing and public relations audits to identify opportunities for broader community and donor reach

  • A business operations audit to support the organization's internal processes

  • Ongoing social media management and newsletter/email support to keep supporters informed

  • Planning for web development on data collection forms and reporting tools to support program operations

The Takeaway: More Room to Serve the People Who Walk Through the Door

Nonprofits doing frontline work for vulnerable communities rarely have the bandwidth to also run a marketing department. By handling the website, brand, and marketing infrastructure, KDBC gave Baltimore Safe Haven's team more room to focus on what matters most: serving the people who walk through their doors. Baltimore Safe Haven went on to continue working with KDBC as a Retainer Client, with ongoing audits and support built into the relationship.
